TOPEKA—The 10th Judicial District Nominating Commission will convene at 1 p.m., February 22, 2017, at the Johnson County Administrative Building in Olathe to review applications. On March 8, 2017, the nominating commission will meet to conduct interviews and select the judge. The time and place for this meeting will be posted on the nominating commission's website at http://www.jocojnc.org/index.aspx. Commission meetings are open to the public.

The 10th judicial district consists of Johnson County. The vacancy was created by the March 2017 retirement of District Magistrate Judge Linda S. Trigg.

Candidates for the vacancy are: ·

  • Jenifer Ashford, Shawnee, who is city prosecutor for Shawnee and Lake Quivira 

  • Marc Berry, Olathe, who is in private practice 

  • Kevin Gunkel, Olathe, who is an assistant city prosecutor 

  • Mary Ann Kancel, Kansas City, who is in private practice 

  • Christopher Kopecky, Overland Park, who is in private practice 

  • Alex McCauley, Olathe, who is in private practice 

  • Karen Nations, Overland Park, who is in private practice 

  • Michael Parrett, Olathe, who is in private practice 

  • Robert Scott, Lenexa, who is a Lenexa municipal judge 

  • Wayne Smith, Kansas City, MO, who is with Legal Aid of Western Missouri 

  • Karen Snyder, Leawood, who is in private practice 

  • Jessica Sokoloff, Shawnee, who is in private practice 

  • Sarah Stewart, Olathe, who is in private practice 

  • John Sutherland, Kansas City, who is the former Linn County Attorney 

  • Ruth Vano, Overland Park, who is in private practice

To be eligible for a district magistrate judge position, the candidate must have graduated from a high school, secondary school, or the equivalent; be a resident of Johnson County at the time of taking office and while serving; and either be a lawyer admitted to practice in Kansas or pass an examination given by the Supreme Court and become certified within 18 months.

The 10th Judicial District Nominating Commission consists of Justice Lee A. Johnson as the nonvoting chair; lawyer members Stephen M. Howe (commission secretary), Judge Kevin P. Moriarity, J. Brett Milbourn, John M. Parisi, Greg L. Musil, Thomas J. Bath, and Rick G. Gunn; and nonlawyer members Anna Beth Surbaugh, Gregory M. Doring, Vivien Jennings, Doug D. Brownlee, James A. C. Griffith, Joe W. Beveridge, and Samuel H. Turner Jr.
