TOPEKA—The 8th Judicial District Nominating Commission has appointed Maritza Segarra, Junction City, district magistrate judge of the newly created position in Geary County.

The nine-member commission was responsible for selecting the judge. The magistrate position was created by the 2004 Kansas Legislature, and Chief Justice Kay McFarland signed an order certifying the position to be located in Geary County.

Segarra is a graduate of Kansas State University and received her law degree from the Washburn University School of Law. She is a member of the Geary County Bar Association and serves on the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity and Friends of Animals. She also is chair of the Board of Trustees for Geary Community Hospital.
